How much does a small business website cost in the UK? The honest answer depends less on page count than on who owns the build, the hosting and the updates after launch. A DIY template, a freelancer and an agency can all produce a decent homepage. The real price difference shows up in year two.

What actually drives the cost

Page count matters, but it is rarely the biggest line. Content is. If you arrive with approved copy and good photos, the build is faster. If someone has to write service pages, source images and chase sign-off, that time is real and it belongs in the quote.

After that, cost follows complexity. A brochure site with a contact form is one job. Add a CMS your team edits every week, a booking or quote flow, card payments, a product catalogue or an integration with your accounts package, and you are building software, not just pages. E-commerce adds stock, delivery rules, VAT and refunds, and each of those needs testing.

Then there is the part most quotes skip: running the site. Domain, hosting, SSL, backups, security patches and framework updates cost money every month whether or not anyone budgets for them. I’ve inherited plenty of London sites that were cheap to launch and then sat unpatched for three years because nobody was paid to look after them.

Three ways UK small businesses usually buy a website

A DIY template on a website builder is the lowest upfront outlay. It suits a sole trader who needs a presence this week and is happy to write the copy and keep it updated. The limit is that you become the developer, designer and support desk, and the site can only do what the platform allows.

A freelancer usually gives you a custom design and a personal relationship. Good ones are excellent value. The risk is continuity: if they move on, who holds the hosting login, the domain and the code?

An agency or managed service costs more than DIY but should include design, build, hosting and ongoing care under one contract, with a team rather than one person behind it. You pay for continuity and accountability, and you should check that you still own the domain and content.

Quick Comparison

  • DIY template. Upfront cost: lowest. Ongoing: platform subscription plus your own time. Best for: sole traders who need something live quickly. Watch for: platform limits and no one to call.
  • Freelancer. Upfront cost: moderate, varies widely by scope. Ongoing: often ad hoc. Best for: a custom site with a clear, stable scope. Watch for: who owns logins if they become unavailable.
  • Agency or managed service. Upfront cost: highest or spread monthly. Ongoing: hosting, updates and support agreed in the contract. Best for: businesses that want the site run for them. Watch for: lock-in and unclear ownership of the domain.

How Eight Mile prices websites

Our managed website service is one monthly figure. It covers the design and build, domain registration, cloud hosting, SSL, backups, branded email on your own domain, search foundations like titles and sitemaps, scheduled content changes, security patches and framework updates. You approve the design before the build and sign off the site before it goes live, and every site carries a twelve-month warranty with direct contact with the engineers who built it. We don’t publish one price for every site, because the figure depends on what yours needs to do.

If you run a trade or service business and want the office side too, TradeOps is a separate product sold at one published price, covering the website and the quotes, jobs and invoicing behind it, with no per-user charges. Anything bespoke beyond that starts with a free scoping conversation and is quoted at a fixed price before any billing starts.

So what should you budget?

How much a small business website costs in the UK comes down to how much of the running you want to carry yourself. If you have the time and the site is simple, DIY is fine. If the site brings in enquiries and you would rather not be the person patching it at 11pm, budget for build and care together, not build alone.

If you want a straight figure for your site rather than a range, contact Eight Mile and tell us what the site needs to do, how many pages you expect and whether you need bookings, payments or a shop.
